History of EIP development
Early Intervention in Psychosis has its roots in Australia in a service called Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) who led the way in establishing a new approach to working with young people with emerging psychosis in the 1980’s.
As word spread across the international mental health community, Birmingham Mental Health Services began to deliver an EIP service in England in 1994, closely followed by other key services and professionals in the UK. As interest and knowledge grew a body of evidence started to be gathered which led to the principles of EIP being adopted by the Department of Health and included in the National Policy Implementation.
The Department of Health set a target and provided funding for 50 new EIP services to be set up by April 2004. Leeds was one of the new services to be established and was operational from June 2005.
