EIP the bigger picture

The term Early Interventions in Psychosis has grown out of a need to find a more positive way of providing treatment for people who develop psychosis. In the past, individuals were given a diagnosis, such as schizophrenia, along with a message that this was a life-long illness that they would not recover from.   Little support was available until people were already experiencing a serious psychotic episode.

What we now know through clinical research is the earlier we detect someone is experiencing symptoms related to psychosis and the sooner we offer support, the better the outcome is for that individual.   Therefore a new approach to working with psychosis, EIP is now recognised as an essential part of comprehensive mental service provision.
